National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) at Herndon Middle School

According to the NJHS website the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) was established in 1929 and is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding middle level students. More than just an honor roll, NJHS serves to recognize those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Character, and Citizenship.
The Douglas V. Evans Chapter at Herndon Middle School follows the guidelines of the National Organization.
To be eligible for membership for the Douglas V. Evans Chapter at Herndon Middle School you must meet five specific standards:*
- Scholarship: A minimum of 3.5 GPA (cumulative) Seventh grade students will receive an application in the spring if they qualify by GPA.
- Service: Students should show evidence or interest in doing community service
- Character, Leadership, and Citizenship: Good recommendations from your teachers and other evidence
Individual Service Hours
Every member of NJHS is required to complete 10 hours of community service in the school and 10 hours of community service in the community. Students consider their interests and partake in related service. Students must complete their service hours in order to be honored by receiving a special NJHS insignia pin during the June induction ceremony.
Every year NJHS orchestrates a Canned Food Drive, in conjunction with a local food bank, to collect canned goods and other non-perishable items from students and parents at Herndon Middle School. NJHS members receive in-school service hours for assisting.

*Exemplary NJHS Candidate Standards:
Students who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale), as established by Herndon Middle School’s Faculty Council, meet the scholarship requirement for membership. These students are then eligible for consideration on the basis of service, leadership, character and citizenship.
This quality is defined through the voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community, done without compensation and with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit.
Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, promoters of school activities, idea-contributors, dependable, and persons who exemplify positive attitudes about life. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others.
A student of good character upholds principles of morality and ethics, is cooperative, demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability, shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others.
The student who demonstrates citizenship understands the importance of civic involvement; has a high regard for freedom, justice, and respect for the American form of government; and demonstrates mature participation and responsibility through involvement with such activities as scouting, community organizations, and school clubs.
